A Stitch In Time Saves Nine

This is a desktop toy for generating inspiration… alleviating boredom… annoying my daughter etc…

One swallow doesn't make a summer

The PCB is the one I use for the VFD Approximate Clock made by Olimex with the clock components omitted and the software pared to a minimum to keep as much flash as possible for the storage of the proverbs. The features are:

Knowledge is power

The is the approximate clock schematic but marked up to show the components that are omitted for this design.

The two jumpers (JP1 and JP2) are used in this design and you can optionally fit a push button (JP4 in the schematic above); usage is as follows:

We must all eat a peck of dirt before we die

You should look in the "/VFD Projects/Proverb Generator" folder.

The software was written entirely using C and compiled using the CodeVisionAVR compiler. The complete source code is available. Beware - C purists beware that my C is perhaps a bit idiosyncratic but I like it. However, I hope you will find the code well commented. I have included the required libraries and you may have to play with the various paths to suit your individual set up. This zip file includes the required fuse settings and compilled hex files.

To maximise the number of proverbs in the generator I use Huffman compression to first compress the proverb text using a console application written in C using the free Microsoft 2008 Express Edition. Huffman compression reduces the 27639 bytes of proverb text to 14745 bytes plus a short decompression tree (which has a destination in eeprom so as not to consume flash); a compression of nearly 50%. The proverbs, proverb compression software and compiled console application can be downloaded from the dropbox.

No one should be judge in his own cause

The board has sat on my desk displaying random proverbs for a few months now and has attracted good comment from all that have seen it. Sometimes the proverbs can be inspiring (but only sometimes).

My camera is not brilliant; in practice the display looks a lot better than this.

Hang a thief when he's young, and he'll no' steal when he's old

Notes:

  1. If a 24VDC power supply is used then D1 - D5, C3 - C7 can be omitted. JP3 must be set accordingly.
  2. The current software version does not address the dot or comma display so IC8 and C15 can be omitted (it would not hurt to fit the socket and C15 as a low cost compromise).
  3. DC input voltage can be anywhere in the range 12 VDC to 40VDC, higher if the high voltage version of IC1 is used.
  4. ISP connector is arranged as a standard Atmel 6 pin - pins 1 and 6 are marked for correct orientation.
  5. This diode is for accidental reverse polarity protection and is not intended as a rectifier.
